Desert Biome Project Ideas

Instructor: Maria Airth

Maria has a Doctorate of Education and over 15 years of experience teaching psychology and math related courses at the university level.

Desert biomes are an important part of the global ecosystem. This lesson presents projects for elementary and middle school aged students to deepen their understanding of these amazing environments.

Projects on Desert Biomes

It is likely that your students do not live in a desert, yet deserts are an important part of the global ecosystem. When a child is not directly impacted by a concept it is much harder for the student to retain information about the concept than when it is something that they experience on a regular basis.

A great way to help students retain and internalize information that may seem foreign to them is to get them engaged in projects. This lesson presents projects designed for young children (lower elementary) as well as older children (upper elementary and middle school).

Young Children

Enjoy these projects with children learning the basics about desert biomes, lower elementary school level.

Diorama

Ask parents to donate shoe boxes so children can make dioramas of a desert biome in the classroom.

You will need:

  • Clean play sand
  • Plastic desert animals
  • Plastic desert plants
  • PVA glue
  • Art supplies (markers, scissors, etc.)

After reviewing the types of things normally found in a desert and viewing many pictures of desert environments, encourage your students to build their own desert environment in diorama style. You may consider having a sanding area so that you can control the gluing of sand into their deserts.
