In this lesson, we will discuss and differentiate between program objectives, mission statements, and vision statements. The lesson will also address important related factors.

Organizational Strategy

Have you ever witnessed a sports game where the team had no plan or team strategy? How about seeing a sports team operating without a head coach? Without either of these key components, the game would result in absolute chaos. The same can be said for an organization that lacks an organizational strategy, such as program objectives, mission statements, and vision statements. Let's look at what makes these three things different as well as how best practices affect all three using stakeholder concerns, program assessments, and organizational strategy.

Objectives & Statements

Many people often confuse the purposes of program objectives, mission statements, and vision statements. Unfortunately, many of those people are employed in high-level jobs by multi-million dollar corporations. So, what exactly is the difference between these three?

Program objectives can be defined as a detailed plan to reach a specific stated goal for an organization. A program objective is pre-determined and generally states a target that the organization is attempting to reach. For example, a shoe company may have the objective to sell 50 pairs of shoes in their first month of business.

A mission statement is defined as the purpose as to why the business is in existence. The mission statement states the reason or reasons as to why the organization was established. For example, the mission statement for a homeless shelter would be to provide the less fortunate and those who have fallen on hard times with a place to lay their heads, groom themselves, and have hot meals daily.

Lastly, a vision statement is a statement or group of statements that are designed to capture where the business would like to be in the future. A vision statement attempts to conceptualize and give employees, customers, and stakeholders an image of what is projected by the company. An example of a vision statement for a company would be as follows: 'To become the industry leader in light bulb technologies for the next 10 to 20 years by slowly introducing new innovations as they become available.'

Best Practices for Strategy

When referring to the term best practices, we are referring to the best methods to achieve the desired result that have been tested through trials, experiments, or research. Best practices are a tried and true method, and this is the same for the three organizational strategies of program objectives, mission statements, and vision statements. Let's look at these three organizational strategies and just how they are developed with best practices.

Best practices for program objectives would include providing a way to measure if the objective was successful and just how successful or not it was. For example, let's say that it was your goal to sell 100 shoes in a month, but you failed to meet the objective. Best practices would allow the organization to go back and determine exactly what went wrong through careful analysis.

Stakeholders, who can be described as those having a vested interest in a company, are a major part of best practices with program objectives because they are typically interested in the reasons why an organization is not meeting its specific objectives. If a stakeholder feels as if the reasons hold a serious concern, the person may opt to go a different route and no longer continue being a stakeholder with that organization. A program assessment of an organization, which gives an executive summary of all things related to the organization, will help to disclose this information to stakeholders, which makes it an important part of developing best practices.
