Discussion Questions for Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights Chapter Questions & Answers

The story of Wuthering Heights describes societal expectations, human emotions, and personal trials. The following questions review sections of the book and help your students discuss the characters and events of the story. Use these questions to encourage discussion and insight into the book, Wuthering Heights.

Setting

  • What are the three main locations of the story? What is the significance of each location? How are they different? How are they similar? Which place did you like the best?
  • What is Lockwood's role in the story? What is his character like? Why is his existence in the story important?

Chapters 1-8

  • When Lockwood gets to Wuthering Heights, who does he encounter? Why does he go there?
  • Who is Heathcliff? What is his character like?
  • Who is Nelly? What is her significance in the story?
  • We meet Catherine and Hindley. What are they like? What do they do to give us an insight into their motives and character?
  • How did Catherine and Heathcliff feel about the Lintons? How were their responses different?
  • Describe Catherine in the first eight chapters of the book. Did you like her? Why or why not? How do you think her personality would have been different if she had grown up differently?
  • What is Catherine's relationship with Edgar? What is her relationship with Heathcliff? How does her feelings for the two guys cause problems?

Chapters 9-13

  • Why do you think Catherine chose Edgar over Heathcliff? Did you expect this to happen? Why or why not? What would you have done in her situation?
  • Discuss why Heathcliff left. Why did he leave? When he returned, what was he like?
  • In this section of the book, we learn about Isabella and her role in the story. How does her character fit in with the other characters? What was her interaction with Heathcliff? What is her interaction with Nelly?
