The Dust Bowl was an area in the middle of the U.S. that was experiencing immense dust storms during the Great Depression. This lesson provides a variety of discussion topics for students to become engaged in this historical topic.

The Dust Bowl

The Dust Bowl is an area that encompassed Kansas, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and the panhandle of Texas. During the financial crisis of the Great Depression, this area was being affected by other issues as well. Due to improper farming, too much grassland being tilled up for wheat, a drought, and high temperatures these areas were experiencing dust storms that were so severe they would peel paint off cars and make a sunny day dark like night. These storms continued to damage farms, which increased the troubles of the people and their ability to make money. Due to the severity of storms and the preexisting economic strain, many people fled the Dust Bowl area.

Discussion Topics

The following discussion topics include different aspects of the Dust Bowl so that students can get a full understanding of the challenges faced during this time.

The Okies

The people who lived in Oklahoma and left during the Dust Bowl and Great Depression were called Okies. They were heavily looked down upon for not staying and enduring such hard times. Have the students assess why they think they were condemned, and if they think they made the right decision to leave.
