Ecology Project Ideas for High School

Instructor: Adrianne Baron

Adrianne has taught high school and college biology and has a master's degree in cancer biology.

Your students are learning about ecology now, and you want to give them hands-on experiences that aid in their understanding. The following projects are interesting and intriguing ways to accomplish that goal.

Ecology Projects

Gaining an understanding of ecology requires some work. Your students can gain that understanding by completing projects that are focused on ecology. Visual and 3-D models of ecosystems help students comprehend the interactions between species and their environment as well as within and between different species.

Shoebox Ecosystem Project

  • plastic shoebox with lid
  • clay or Play-doh
  • dirt
  • water
  • rubber animals and plants

The Shoebox Ecosystem Project is ideal for all level high schoolers. The directions can be adjusted so they are more grade appropriate as necessary. This project is best completed as an at home assignment over a weekend or break rather than an in-class assignment.
