Artem has a doctor of veterinary medicine degree.

This lesson plan will help students learn some basic biography of Edvard Munch and his painting style. It will also outline two activities that will help students recognize his paintings and appreciate how valuable they are to collectors around the world.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students should be able to:

  • Discuss Edvard Munch's biography
  • Explain Edvard Munch's painting style
  • Identify Edvard Munch's paintings

  • Note cards or lecture slides with 30-50 images from various artists, including several of Munch's and other German expressionists

Instructions & Discussion Questions

  • To start the class, ask if anyone knows who Edvard Munch is?
  • Allow about a minute for discussion.
  • Introduce the text lesson, Edvard Munch: Biography, Paintings & The Scream. As a class, read the section 'Abstract Expressions'. Discuss:
    • Where was Edvard Munch born and when did he live?
    • What style of painting is Munch associated with?
    • How many works did Munch complete?
    • What was his painting style known for?

Munch's Style Activity

  • Pull out the set of flashcards or lecture slides with 30-50 paintings from various artists. Some of these paintings should be Munch's. The rest can be paintings and painting styles from various other artists.
  • Show students some example paintings of Munch's work, pointing out several elements of the style.
  • Now test their ability to recognize his style by moving through the flashcards. The point of the activity is not to name the paintings nor understand the details of Munch's artistic style but to simply be able to pick out his work among many.
