Emergency Services Craft Activities

Instructor: Grace Pisano

Grace has a bachelor's degree in history and a master's degree in teaching. She previously taught high school in several states around the country.

Use these activities to help early learners understand the role of different emergency services and their workers. These activities are designed with preschool and early elementary students in mind.

Introducing Emergency Services

Young students often have a fascination with firefighters, police officers and the EMTs who work on an ambulance. It is important to utilize this excitement to teach students how these services play an important role in keeping everyone in the community safe. After learning about the role of emergency services, have your students complete one or all of the craft activities below. The crafts are easy to complete and could be the start of a great conversation between students and their parents about what they are learning in school.

Creating a Fire Hat

For this activity, begin by giving each student a plastic fire hat. Many fire stations have these for fire prevention presentations and would probably be happy to share a class set with you. Next, have students create decorations for their hat. You will want things that make them think of fire - for example red, orange or yellow feathers, pipe cleaners, pompoms, paint, beads, stickers, etc. Allow students to decorate their hats any way they choose.
