Successful people are able to use feedback from colleagues and managers to develop their skills and abilities. In this lesson, you'll learn the importance of soliciting and applying feedback from your most important critic - yourself.

The Importance of Self-Assessment

There are many ways for employees and managers to receive feedback. At a minimum, most employees receive an annual performance appraisal where their managers share some thoughts about the employee's performance for the previous year. Some organizations use 360-degree feedback, an assessment strategy that gathers information from colleagues, subordinates, and customers, as well as managers. While these sources of feedback are valuable, they are all external to the employee and, thus, subject to bias, complacency, or the natural tendency people may have to shy away from giving difficult, constructive feedback to be nice.

In fact, there is only one source of completely honest feedback and that is from yourself, no matter how difficult it might be. A self-assessment is an important tool for anyone who wants to continually improve their knowledge, skills, and abilities. This type of performance appraisal is completed by the subject, for the subject. It can be formal, having the same format as a traditional performance appraisal, or it can be an informal exercise of reflection and introspection.

A Successful Self-Assessment

Self-assessments can be difficult to perform because no matter who you are, there are areas in your performance that can be improved. A successful self-assessment requires you to identify and acknowledge these areas. Human nature leads us to sometimes develop blind spots so we don't see our own weaknesses, thereby enforcing our esteem, even if it's at the cost of fulfilling our potential. A successful self-assessment will uncover these blind spots and reveal the areas, if improved, that can help you become more successful, professionally and personally.

Examples of Self-Assessments

Self-assessments can range from passive to comprehensive. If you're engaged in gathering feedback with the intention to use that information to modify your behaviors, you're performing a self-assessment. Walking into a colleague's or manager's office and asking them for feedback on your performance during a recent project is an example of a self-assessment. If you use an online survey tool and design a comprehensive performance appraisal that you then send to colleagues, supervisors, and subordinates to fill out, you're engaged in a self-assessment.
