Description

Teaching your middle school students about energy conservation can help them academically and affect their home lives, as well. Use these activities to engage students in exploring their use of energy and making a community energy plan.

Energy Conservation Activities

An understanding of energy conservation can be applied in students' academic world as well as in their personal lives, both now and in the future. Use these team activities to help your middle school students analyze their own use of energy, build a community plan for energy use, and communicate the importance of conserving energy. As they engage with peers and conduct research, students can learn a great deal from these interactions. Additionally, a reflective portion of each activity will help solidify their learning and increase the chances that they will apply their knowledge in the future.

Home Energy Survey

In this activity, you can help your students understand how their everyday activities at home use energy and how they can make simple changes to curb excessive use. Provide students with a list of home energy uses, such as air conditioning, lighting, electronics, laundering equipment, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Have each student take home the list and work with their parents to estimate the hours of weekly use for each type of energy use listed.
