ESL American Football Lesson Plan

Instructor: Mary Beth Burns

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

In this lesson plan, ESL students will learn about American football. First, they will learn football-related vocabulary words and create a vocabulary book. Then, they will engage in a vocabulary game. At the end, they will create an original sports commentary.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Define and illustrate football-related vocabulary words.
  • Write and say a sports commentary using vocabulary words.

Materials

  • Photographs of the vocabulary words
  • Copies of blank vocabulary books, one per student
  • 2-3 video clips of football games with sports commentators
  • 5-7 video clips of football games with no sound
  • Index cards with vocabulary words written on them
  • Blank writing paper

Instructions

  • Show students the pictures of the different vocabulary words. Ask students to turn and talk about what the pictures have in common. Call on students to share responses.
  • Explain that all the pictures have to do with American football, which is what they are going to learn about in today's lesson.
  • Display and point to each picture, one at a time. Say the vocabulary word and write it next to the picture. Have students repeat the word. Discuss prior knowledge and background experiences with the vocabulary word. Use it in a sentence.
  • Students will draw a picture of the word and write it in their vocabulary books. Encourage students to try to use the vocabulary word in an original sentence of their own.
  • Repeat the process for all vocabulary words.
