ESL Autobiography Lesson Plan

Instructor: Mary Beth Burns

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

In this lesson, students will listen to real examples of autobiographies. With graphic and interactive supports, they will plan, organize, and write their own autobiography after viewing a teacher model.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Define autobiography
  • Write an autobiography


This lesson will take approximately 45-60 minutes.

Curriculum Standards

This lesson is aligned to the following Common Core standards:

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.3: Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.
  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.4.3.a: Orient the reader by establishing a situation and introducing a narrator and/or characters; organize an event sequence that unfolds naturally.


Students will need to understand the meaning of the following words to do this activity:

  • Autobiography
  • First person point of view


  • 5-7 autobiographies
  • Copies of a blank timeline graphic organizer
  • Chart paper with the following transitional phrases written on it: at the age of, as a child, during, as I grew older, a few years later, in April 2010, at that time, three years later, today, one day I plan to.
  • Computer and projector to view this video lesson on autobiographies. Or make paper copies of this lesson transcript to pass out to the class.
