ESL Autumn Vocabulary: List & Activities

This lesson for teachers of ESL students will provide a list of common vocabulary words related to autumn. We will also look at some activities to help teach students the new autumn vocabulary.

Autumn Vocabulary

Autumn is the season when everything in nature begins to change. Leaves change colors from green to red and gold, and the weather becomes cool and crisp. Autumn is also the time for many U.S. customs and traditions: picking apples, carving pumpkins, making s'mores, sitting around bonfires, and watching football.

To help your ESL students acclimate themselves to American culture, you can teach them vocabulary words and phrases related to autumn. Following are some sample word lists.

Food, Drink, and Harvest

  • Pumpkin
  • Corn
  • Squash
  • Apple cider
  • Pumpkin pie
  • S'mores
  • Scarecrow
  • Acorn
  • Crops
  • Turkey
