This lesson provides a variety of English as a Second Language (ESL) Business English topics for use in the classroom and two frameworks for using them. The topics range in difficulty level and can be easily adjusted to meet student needs.

ESL Business English Conversation Topics

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) Business English can sometimes pose a challenge. How do you teach required vocabulary without boring professional students with rudimentary business conversations? This lesson provides a list of business-related topics with associated vocabulary or phrases, and two engaging frameworks for classroom delivery and practice.

Business English Topics

This section offers a list of business conversation topics and related vocabulary or phrases, which you can use for classroom practice. Before dividing the class into small groups or partners for practice, demonstrate a few conversations for the benefit of the entire class. During practice, be sure that students are using these vocabulary and phrases correctly during their conversations.

Business Meetings

Topic vocabulary: Conference room, meeting minutes, objectives, adjourn, agenda

Meeting a Client for the First Time

Topic vocabulary: Handshake, business card, appointment, reschedule, follow-up

Sending a Business Email

Topic vocabulary: Attachment, junk mail, sender/recipient, message, returned

Taking a Client to Dinner

Topic vocabulary: Reservation, menu, wine list, check/bill, tip

Asking for Clarification

Topic phrases:

  • Can you please repeat that?
