ESL Canadian Culture Lesson Plan

John has tutored algebra and SAT Prep and has a B.A. degree with a major in psychology and a minor in mathematics from Christopher Newport University.

This lesson plan will educate your students about Canadian culture. They will also participate in fun hands-on activities that will help to reinforce newly learned concepts.

Learning Objectives

After studying this lesson your students will be able to:

  • Determine when Canada was founded.
  • Identify many of the cultural aspects of Canada.
  • Sing the words to the Canadian national anthem.

Length

1-1.5 Hours

Materials

  • Copies of the Canadian national anthem, one per pair of students
  • Copy of the 'Canadian Railroad Trilogy' (available online for no charge)
  • Internet access
  • Two pre-printed worksheets, one containing 41 definitions related to Canadian culture, and one with 41 corresponding definitions, but not in the correct order

Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including vocabulary specific to domains related to history/social studies.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.7

Integrate visual information (e.g., in charts, graphs, photographs, videos, or maps) with other information in print and digital texts.

Instructions and Activities

  • Introduce Canada, and point to it on a map.
  • Ask students what they currently know about Canada.
  • Read the vocab list above.
  • Ask students what each vocab word means and write it out on the board beside the term.
  • Break students up into pairs.

Activity One

  • Inform your students they are going to be participating in an exciting Internet Scavenger Hunt about many aspects of the culture of Canada.
  • Hand out two pre-printed worksheets, one with the following 41 terms related to Canadian culture, and one with the 41 corresponding definitions, but in mixed order.
