ESL Carnival Lesson Plan

Instructor: Mary Beth Burns

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

In this lesson plan, ESL students will learn about carnivals. There is a focus on carnival related vocabulary. After an introduction to the carnival vocabulary words, students will participate in a BINGO game and create a mural.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe elements of a typical carnival using appropriate vocabulary.
  • Create a mural illustrating a carnival.

Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases based on grade 1 reading and content, choosing flexibly from an array of strategies.

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.1.5

With guidance and support from adults, demonstrate understanding of word relationships and nuances in word meanings.

Materials

  • Labeled printed images of the vocabulary words
  • Unlabeled printed images of the vocabulary words
  • 4 x 4 blank BINGO cards, one per student
  • BINGO markers, several per student
  • Large butcher paper
  • Markers
  • Paint
  • Photos of famous murals
