ESL Chinese New Year Lesson Plan

Use this lesson to help your ESL students learn about Chinese New Year. They'll do some engaging activities to help them learn about symbols and traditions from the important holiday.

Learning Objectives

After completing this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Identify what common Chinese New Year items symbolize.
  • Describe Chinese New Year traditions.

Materials

  • Photos of: Chinese dragons, Chinese lanterns, red envelopes, firecrackers, Chinese scrolls with lucky messages, coins, fish dinner, noodles, dumplings
  • Note cards with words that say 'abundance,' 'long life,' and 'family unity' and pictures of fish, noodles, and dumplings, enough sets for each group of students
  • Computers, one for each group
