ESL Commercials Lesson Plan

Instructor: Mary Beth Burns

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

In this lesson plan, ELL students will learn about commercials. Students will engage in a variety of activities that involve many opportunities for speaking, listening and writing. At the end, students will create an original commercial.

Learning Objectives

  • View a variety of commercials
  • Identify marketing strategies used in commercials
  • Generate a list of sensory adjectives that could be used to sell a product
  • Create an original commercial

Length

45-60 minutes

Curriculum Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.5.3

Use knowledge of language and its conventions when writing, speaking, reading, or listening.

Materials

  • Video clips of 3-5 popular commercials
  • 5-7 objects that could be sold (e.g. a can of soup, a hat, etc.)
  • 5-7 digital cameras/mobile devices with cameras
  • Blank paper
