ESL Community Lesson Plan

Suzanne has taught all levels PK-graduate school and has a PhD in Instructional Systems Design. She currently teachers literacy courses to preservice and inservice teachers.

ESL learners examine community locations and services through the activities in this lesson plan. ESL learners will be engaged in the lesson through the use of digital photography and discussion.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this lesson, students will be able to:

  • understand and identify vocabulary related to community locations
  • explain what tasks or services can be completed or received at each place in the community
  • identify community locations in the neighborhood of the school
  • answer questions about community locations on a basic map

Length

90-120 minutes, over two class sessions

Curriculum Standards

  • ELP 9-12.1

An ELL can construct meaning from oral presentations and literary and informational text through grade-appropriate listening, reading, and viewing.

  • ELP 9-12.5

An ELL can conduct research and evaluate and communicate findings to answer questions or solve problems.

  • ELP 9-12.8

An ELL can determine the meaning of words and phrases in oral presentations and literary and informational text.

Materials Needed

  • Presentation, such as PowerPoint, including the listed vocabulary terms with an image for each one
  • Vocabulary handout
  • Digital cameras/cellphone cameras
  • Computer access for students
  • Whiteboard/chalkboard
