ESL Conversation Questions about Artificial Intelligence

Instructor: Sarah Mills

Sarah is an educational freelance writer and has taught English and ESL in grades k-12 and college. She has a master's degree in both Literacy and TESOL.

This lesson includes several discussion questions that English as a second language (ESL) teachers can use to facilitate student discussions about the fun and interesting topic of artificial intelligence (AI).

Using Discussion Questions with ESL Students

Discussions provide ESL students with an authentic way to immerse themselves in English and practice their oral language skills. When ESL students engage in discussions with their peers, they can acquire academic and social language in a comfortable environment. Students are more likely to take risks that improve their vocabulary development when their guard is down and they don't feel threatened.

For these reasons, discussion activities should be a regular part of your ESL classroom. You can incorporate discussions by establishing a routine that students come to expect. For example, you might designate the first or last ten minutes of class each day to discussion questions. You might also allow students to work with a partner on discussion questions if they finish their work early. You can even incorporate discussion question activities into a classroom center activity.

Now let's look at some questions you can give your students about artificial intelligence (AI).

Understanding Artificial Intelligence

  • What is AI?
  • What are the main differences between human intelligence and AI?
