Getting your ESL students talking and listening to one another is one of the best ways to help them practice their English. The questions about happiness in this lesson will catalyze deep conversation.

Why Ask Questions About Happiness?

Are you an ESL teacher who sometimes struggles to get your students talking in deep, prolonged, or meaningful ways? Perhaps you're tired of offering seemingly superficial conversational prompts. One thing that can be really beneficial to many ESL students is the opportunity to talk in English about abstract, thought-provoking topics. Happiness is one such topic.

By engaging in conversations about happiness, students will have the opportunity to really practice thinking in English. They'll have to formulate deep ideas and then express them in accurate ways. Students will have the chance to experiment with new and interesting vocabulary when they talk about happiness. They will also get to communicate aspects of their identity and cultural background.

The questions in this lesson are designed to get your students' conversational juices flowing. You can pose these questions to your students yourself, or you can break them up into partnerships or small groups and have them ask these questions of one another. Some students might even have questions about happiness that they would like to add on to these lists.
