ESL Discussion Questions About Shopping

Instructor: Matthew Hamel

Matt has degrees in Journalism and Business and has taught a variety of courses at high schools and universities around the world.

Love it or hate it, everyone has an opinion about shopping. This lesson provides ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers with shopping-related conversation questions for classroom use.

Shop Talk

Shopping, whether for essentials, like food, or extravagances, like designer clothing, is an important topic for ESL (English as a Second Language) learners to understand. Being able to converse freely in English can increase confidence and inspire continued learning, so it's important to give your learners ample time to practice their discussion skills. The shopping-related questions in this lesson will enable students to learn and practice new vocabulary, pronunciations, and grammar structures.

There are a few ways you can use these questions:

  • Pair students together, and give them time to ask and answer questions. Every few minutes, have students switch partners so that they can hear different opinions and perspectives.
  • Distribute a copy of the questions to each student and ask them to individually practice answering the questions.
  • Use the questions as a way to assess student progress with one-on-one teacher-student interviews. This is also a great way to offer helpful tips and insights to help students improve.

It's also important to note that although many of these questions can be answered with a yes or no, students should expand on their answers by providing details and examples. If desired, you can require students to give a minimum 10-second response to every question.
