ESL Possessive Adjectives Lesson Plan

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan will help ESL teachers explain possessive adjectives and their proper use to students. Students will read a lesson about possessive adjective and practice using them in context.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • define possessive adjectives
  • differentiate between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns
  • properly use possessive adjectives in context


This lesson will take approximately 45-90 minutes.

Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.

Lesson Instructions

Materials needed:

Activate prior knowledge by writing down the words 'my,' 'your,' and 'our.' Ask students what these words have in common. Explain that the lesson will focus on words that indicate belonging.
