Teaching ESL Preschool Vocabulary

We all know how challenging it can be to keep a young child's attention for more than a few moments at a time. That gets even harder when you are speaking a language other than the child's native language. In English as a second language (ESL) preschool classes, it's important to keep students engaged and active in order to keep them learning. Attention spans do not last long, so students can become restless quite quickly. That's why it can be beneficial to teach in small spurts and change up your activities often.

Incorporating games and activities into the learning process is a great way to keep students active, engaged, and motivated. Not only does this provide a chance for students to get up and move around, but it also provides the opportunity to work on vocabulary in a stress-free way. The more students enjoy themselves while learning, the more likely they are to remain motivated.

Introducing Vocabulary

For preschool-aged ESL students, you generally only want to introduce about three to four new vocabulary words during each lesson. Before you add new words to students' vocabulary lists, be sure they're able to both comprehend and use the words that have already been introduced to. Using games and activities to review vocabulary is a great way to keep students excited, rather than bored with their learning.
