This lesson describes some reading assessment strategies you can apply to ensure comprehension skills in ESL students of varied levels. These strategies provide you with instant feedback on students' progress.

Assessment Makes For Progress

The main purpose of ESL reading assessment strategies is to check for comprehension skills. These strategies allow you to evaluate the progress your students are making, but perhaps most importantly, you are able to target individual students' needs. This can help you to help students advance language-speaking levels and make progress in specific areas of weakness.

The following ESL reading assessment strategies are adaptable to any type of text you choose for your students.

Reading Assessment Through Discussion

Once your students finish reading, you can discuss as a class the answer to questions you design in order to make sure students understood the content they read. In this case, the questions you formulate should be specific and answerable by reading the text.

Reading assessment through discussion of the content is also adaptable to check for the accompanying writing skills. To do this, instead of discussing the answers as a class, have students work either individually or as a group and write down the answers to the questions presented.
