Instructor: Yolanda Reinoso Barzallo

Yolanda holds a CELTA Cambridge, a Juris Doctorate, and a Master of Public Administration. She is a published author of fiction in Spanish.

This shopping vocabulary lesson includes a list of eight useful words and games to teach students of different levels. The words apply to a varied range of shopping situations, and the games allow your students to practice speaking skills.

Why Is English Important When Shopping?

You can begin this lesson by asking your students if they enjoy shopping, and why. It is very likely most of your students will say they love shopping for different reasons. You can then emphasize the fact that shopping can be even more fun if they can fluently navigate through a store using their English language skills. At the end of the day, shopping is one of those activities your students will probably have to do at least once a week, and so, some useful vocabulary will enhance their shopping experiences.

Presenting Shopping Vocabulary Words

This lesson begins with a presentation of eight shopping-related vocabulary words:

  • Aisle
  • Escalator
  • Trolley
  • Sale
  • Cashier
  • Customer
  • Coupon
  • Refund

You can choose to either hand out a printed list or, even better, you can make a PowerPoint presentation. This type of presentation is more engaging as a teaching tool because it adapts to the diverse abilities of different kinds of learners. In addition, the clip art in PowerPoint make it easy to fill in each slide with not just the vocab word, but also an image of it. These are the words you will teach.

Pronunciation Practice and Meaning

The images on the PowerPoint slides provide the class with an immediate understanding of each word. After you pronounce each word, have your students repeat the word once or twice as a group. Then, you can ask two or three students to repeat each word in order to check on pronunciation.
