Instructor: Matthew Hamel

Matt has degrees in Journalism and Business and has taught a variety of courses at high schools and universities around the world.

Superlatives are an essential part of English vocabulary and knowing how to use them correctly can greatly improve the confidence of ESL (English as a Second Language) learners. This lesson provides superlative games for ESL teachers to use with students of varying ages and levels.

ESL Superlatives Games

When used correctly, superlatives can increase the dynamism and range of any ESL student's vocabulary. Both speaking and writing can be improved with the accurate and appropriate use of superlatives. The games in this lesson will provide you with fun and engaging classroom activities designed to get your students talking and writing.

Do One Better - A Game for Beginners

Classroom competitions are a great way to create an energetic and informative learning environment. In this game, low-level ESL students are matched against each other in a battle of superlatives.

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • One student from each team joins you at the front of the class.
  • Give the student from Team One the first adjective from the sample list below.
  • If the student can give you the superlative form, they get one point for their team.
  • Give the student from Team Two the next adjective, and so on.
  • The first two students remain at the front of the class taking turns answering until a wrong answer is given. The student who answered incorrectly must sit down and is replaced by the next teammate in line.
  • Keep repeating the process until all the members of one team have answered incorrectly.
  • Crown the other team the winners!
