Vacation time and vacations are always exciting and therefore they make great topics to get your ESL students writing. This lesson provides prompts based on the vacation theme; they can be used with various class levels.

Students Talk about Vacation

Before ESL students get into a specific writing exercise, you can motivate them by asking them to talk about vacation time. Engaging students with this topic is not difficult because almost everyone gets excited about the vacation time.

To help your ESL students with any topic about vacation, you could encourage your students to build a vocabulary list that is useful for this topic. To begin, ask your students to make a list of verbs they associate with vacation time. To encourage them, you could give them a verb or two to begin (e.g. to rest, to travel). Next, your ESL students can give you a list of nouns that have to do with vacation time (e.g. beach, tourist.) The vocabulary bank your ESL students build during this speaking part of the lesson serves them as a resource at the moment of writing with any of the prompts provided in this lesson. The advantage of these prompts is that you can use them to have students write an essay or a paragraph, whichever you decide for a given group of students.

Vacation Writing Prompts

To make this easier for your students, teachers may want to start with prompts based on tenses students already know.

Using the Past Tense

To begin, your students may have a lot of things to tell about their most recent or other past vacation times.
