ESL Writing A Recipe Lesson Plan

Mary Beth has taught 1st, 4th and 5th grade and has a specialist degree in Educational Leadership. She is currently an assistant principal.

This lesson plan will help ELL's learn how to write a recipe. Students will practice writing in logical order and using appropriate vocabulary through a hands-on model experience.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

  • Write a recipe using a logical sequence
  • Use appropriate vocabulary to write recipe


45-60 minutes

Curriculum Standards

  • CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.3.4

With guidance and support from adults, produce writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task and purpose.

Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.

Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.


Students will need to understand the meaning of following words to be able to do this activity:

  • Mix
  • Stir
  • Bake
  • Cook
  • Sprinkle
  • Spread
  • Scrape
  • Beat
  • Press
  • Pour
  • Tablespoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Cup


  • Vocabulary words on cards with picture clue
  • Bread
  • Peanut Butter
  • Jelly
  • Plastic knife
  • Paper plate
  • Copies of peanut butter and jelly recipe with verbs taken out (in activity)
  • Blank paper
  • Pencils

Lesson Instructions

Before the lesson begins, you will need to prepare the following:

  • Create index cards or a word bank sheet with the aforementioned vocabulary words. You will need the word and a picture that illustrates the definition. Feel free to draw these or find the images online.
    • Each student will need a set of cards or a copy of the sheet.
    • You may also include any additional cooking/baking words that are not in the list that you anticipate your students would need to know.
  • Put the ingredients for the peanut butter and jelly sandwich on a table in the front of the room.
  • Tell the students that you forgot to make your lunch today, so you are going to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to eat. It has been awhile since you have made one, so it is their job to tell you how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich by writing a recipe.
  • Depending on the level of your students, you can have them do one of the following:
  1. ) Set the timer for 5 minutes and have them quickly jot down a recipe for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  2. ) Set the timer for 5 minutes and have them turn and talk with a neighbor to discuss the steps of a recipe.
