Helping students understand what happened in the world after World War II is an important part of modern world history. This lesson provides activities that will focus your students on post-war Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

Understanding the Post-War World

As a high school world history teacher, you undoubtedly spend a segment of your curriculum focusing on World War II. Though this is an important part of historical instruction, students are often left wondering what happened in a variety of regions after the war. Indeed, coming to understand the post-war world is an important segue to a deep comprehension of modern world history and even contemporary geopolitics.

To facilitate a deeper understanding of the post-war world, you can incorporate some hands-on activities into your instruction. This will hold your students' interest and make them more likely to internalize what you are teaching.

The activities in this lesson appeal to a variety of learning styles and strengths while teaching your students about the post-war world.

Europe

Here are some activities that focus students' attention on what happened in Europe after the war.

Maps of Before and After

One of the most significant things that happened in post-war Europe was the redrawing of the political map. As students understand this, they will also be prepared to comprehend the Cold War world.

Have students work in partnerships for this activity. They should observe and analyze a map of Europe before the war and a map of Europe immediately after the war. Ask them to note similarities, differences, and questions that arise.

Then, have students create their own map that is color coded intentionally to show the changes that occurred in the European boundaries and geography overall before and after the war.
