This lesson goes over the definition of adaptive organizations as well as the role of experimentation in such enterprises. It also covers a few examples of experimentation in adaptive organizations.

Change or Get Left Behind

People and companies evolve through change, even if the change isn't wanted. Rarely can a business be successful without adapting to new environmental conditions. Let's go over numerous aspects related to how and why things change through experimentation in adaptive organizations.

Adaptive Organizations

So what is an adaptive organization? While there is more than one actual definition of this term, let's stick to the following definition: an adaptive organization is an enterprise that's able to change rapidly in order to suit numerous conditions.

We can simplify this concept down to an individual level. Bob is really good at math. He gets better and better with practice but he's not adaptive because it's the only thing he knows how to do, though he does it better than anyone else. Alas, a company like Bob would not be an adaptive organization.

On the other hand, there's Peggy. She hasn't mastered any one thing to Bob's level of expertise. However, she's extremely good at learning new things and adapted over time as her life has required. At first she was a chef, then she designed business cards, and now she's learned how to program computers. A company like her is an example of an adaptive organization.

Purpose of Experimentation

Not surprisingly, adaptive organizations are very good at experimentation. The role of experimentation in adaptive organizations is multi-faceted. Experimentation:

  • Improves products
  • Enhances services
  • Can better business strategies
  • May alter important processes
  • Can improve business models

Experimentation Examples

The way by which a company might experiment in order to adapt is multi-faceted and always depends on the company itself, its market, and its offerings.

One such example is a change in ad strategy. If you run a company that sells shoes, how do you successfully advertise that online? Well, marketing companies can experiment with different audiences and different layouts and design elements, such as color and spacing, to figure out the best possible online ad that could be created to reach the right people.
