Fall Lesson Plan for Preschoolers

Explore the season of fall with your preschoolers. Guide them through the changes fall brings and how it affects plants and animals. Further the lesson through science exploration with art, math and literacy.

Lesson Objectives

As a result of this lesson, the students will be able to:

  • name the four seasons
  • name seasonal changes that occur in the fall for both plants and animals


  • Much of the lesson plan could be completed in about an hour. The lesson could be broken into several smaller chunks as well.

Curriculum Standards

Earth Science: In studying earth materials and phenomena, children become aware of key characteristics of earth:

  • There are patterns of change in earth phenomena (day/night; seasons).
  • Weather and seasonal changes affect the environment.

This lesson plan is based on California standards for preschool education. Please refer to the standards for your state to check alignment.


  • Lesson: Autumn Facts: Lesson for Kids
  • Quiz questions
  • Globe
  • Pictures of trees in spring, trees in fall, and evergreen trees
  • Pictures of a corn field in summer and a corn field in fall
  • Fall leaves or bags to gather leaves
  • Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson
  • Samples of crops harvested in your area

Instruction and Activities

Four Seasons

  • Remind students that there are four seasons and identify the current season.
  • Sing the Seasons Song to the tune of ''London Bridge'':
    • Winter, spring, summer, and fall; summer and fall; summer and fall. Winter, spring, summer, and fall. There are four seasons in all.
  • Ask students if they know the word ''autumn.'' Confirm that the words ''autumn'' and ''fall'' are used for the same season. Ask students what they think of when they think of fall. Ask several students to answer and maybe draw pictures of their answers on the board.
  • Use the lesson Autumn Facts: Lesson for Kids. Read the first two sections through ''Autumnal Equinox.''
  • Use a globe to show children that seasons have to do with where we are and where the sun is.
  • Find your location on the globe.
