Fantastic Mr. Fox Comprehension Questions

Teachers, ''Fantastic Mr. Fox'' is a great fictional read for students. In this lesson, students will answer questions to confirm they read the book. They will also be able to share their personal thoughts as they relate to the characters and scenes.

Mr. Fox and His Family

  • Who is Mr. Fox? Use five descriptive words to describe him.
  • Mr. Fox has a large family. How many kids does he have? Discuss their relationship with their dad. Do you have a small or large family? What are the advantages of having a big family? Are there any advantages of having a small family? Explain.
  • Describe Mrs. Fox. What name did she give Mr. Fox? Why? Do you have a nickname? If so, what is it and how did the name form? If not, what nickname would you give yourself? Why?
  • What happens to Mr. Fox's family when he is in the hole? Do you think the farmer's cared about his family? Should they have cared what happened to the family? Why or why not?

The Crime of the Century

  • What crime does Mr. Fox commit? How often and why does he commit this crime? Do you think it's okay to commit a crime if it helps someone else? Why or why not?
  • Who are the victims of Mr. Fox's crime? Describe each one in detail. How do they feel about what continues to happen? Has anyone ever stolen from you? If so, how did it make you feel? If not, how would you feel if someone took something of yours?
  • How do the farmers attempt to stop Mr. Fox from stealing? Are they successful at first? Why or why not?
  • Mr. Fox is pretty resourceful. What does he decide to do while in the hole? Discuss a time when you've had to figure out a big problem. Were you successful? If not, what happened?
  • Who helps Mr. Fox during his dilemma? Describe a teacher, friend, or family member who helped you through a tough time. Were you grateful?
  • How does Fantastic Mr. Fox end? Is Mr. Fox ever punished? Do you think he should have been? Why or why not?
