Finding Major Asian Cities on a Map

Asia is a big continent with many countries. Have you ever wondered where Kolkata and Shanghai are? With this lesson, you'll learn how to locate a number of various countries along with their respective capitals.

India

In our quest to find major Asian cities on a map,let's start our journey in India. India is a country in the southern part of the Asian continent and is located west of China. India is about as big as 1/3 of the United States.

Even though it's smaller than the United States, it has way more residents than the United States. It has almost 1 billion more people living there than the United States. As of 2016, India had a population of 1.3 billion people. Now, that's a lot of people!

India's capital is New Delhi. It's located in the northern part of India.

India does have another major city, that of Kolkata. This city, formerly called Calcutta, used to be India's capital between 1773 to 1911. It's located not too far from the coast next to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh

Going east, let's go to Bangladesh. Bangladesh is an Asian country located between India and China on the Asian continent. India is to its west and China is to its east. It is home to the Bengal tiger. In 2016, Bangladesh had a population of 156 million. Its people are called Bangladeshi and the majority speak Bengali.

Its capital is Dhaka, located at about the center of the country.

China

Going further east, you end up in China, a big country in the eastern part of the Asian continent. China is the country with the highest population in the whole entire world. It's just a little smaller than the US, but it's home to way more people. As of 2016, it has a population of 1.37 billion, just a bit more than India.

It's capital is Beijing, located in the northwestern part of the country.

Another major city in China is that of Shanghai, located on the eastern shore of China. Shanghai is actually China's largest city and one of the world's major financial hubs as well.

South Korea

Continuing the journey eastwards, let's pay a visit to South Korea, another country in the eastern part of the Asian continent. It is east of China and west of Japan. It's known for its hilly countryside as well as for sharing a heavy militarized border with North Korea. As of 2016, it has a population of just under 51 million.

South Korea's capital is Seoul. It is located in the northwestern part of the country.

Japan

Going even further east, there's Japan, an Asian island country east of South Korea. In 2016, Japan had a population of almost 127 million. In terms of size, it's almost as big as the state of California in the US.

It's capital is Tokyo, located roughly in the middle of the island on the eastern coast.

Indonesia

Traveling southwest across the Pacific Ocean takes you to the Philippines and then Indonesia, another island country located in the south eastern part of the Asian continent. The country is actually composed of thousands of volcanic island.
