Fire Safety Week Activities

Instructor: Bethany Calderwood

Bethany has taught special education in grades PK-5 and has a master's degree in special education.

If your class is observing Fire Safety Week, check out these activities for elementary students to address both fire prevention and how to respond to fires.

Fire Safety: Prevention and Preparedness

Students of all ages need to learn to take responsibility for exercising safe behavior, and one important category of safe behavior is fire prevention. Additionally, students need to know how to respond in the event of an out-of-control fire. Preparedness can diminish anxiety and lead to better outcomes if students are ever faced with an actual fire emergency. These activities can be adapted for elementary students at various levels during fire safety week--or any time you are teaching about fire safety.

Activity: Fire Safety Walk

Objective: Learn where the fire exits and fire extinguishers are located in your school.

Materials: Map of the school building

  • Take a class walk around the school. See how many fire extinguishers you can find, and write down the location of each one.
  • At each location where students routinely spend time (gym class, art class, etc.), pause and discuss where the nearest exit is and where students would go in case of a fire or fire drill.
  • Back in the classroom, give each student a copy of a school floor plan. Students mark the locations of the fire extinguishers and building exits.

Activity: Fire Extinguisher Role Play
