What's Fluorine?

Do you enjoy taking care of your teeth by brushing them often to ensure that you have a great smile? You may not realize that something that you drink every day also has a substance that helps to keep your teeth healthy. This substance is called fluoride, which is a form of fluorine, and it is found in small amounts in tap water and toothpaste. Fluoride is an important substance that helps to make your teeth and bones stronger.

Fluorine is a powerful gas, with a strong odor and a light color that appears to be a mixture of green and yellow. It is so powerful that scientists use fluorine in the development of nuclear energy.

Who Discovered Fluorine?

Do you enjoy conducting safe experiments with chemicals in a lab? Your teacher probably designs lab experiments for you and your classmates to explore different substances through the scientific process, which scientists use.

Various chemists suspected that fluorine existed in other chemicals. So, they also conducted experiments to try to discover fluorine. In 1812, a scientist from France named Andre Ampere discovered fluorine and invented the name. However, it wasn't until 1886 that the French scientist, Henri Moissan was successful in isolating fluorine. Moissan was also awarded the high honor of the Nobel Peace Prize for this important discovery.

How Do Scientists Identify Fluorine on the Periodic Table?

Scientists have a system known as the periodic table, which categorizes and organizes various elements on Earth. An element is a substance that is found on Earth that can be identified based on the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in its atoms. Elements are unique because scientists cannot break elements down into simpler substances since they're in their most basic form.

Fluorine is the ninth element of the periodic table and has the abbreviation 'F'. It is also categorized as a halogen. The fluorine atom has nine protons located in the nucleus of its atom and nine electrons that float around in its atom's orbit.

Fluorine is highly reactive because of its low atomic number, which is its number of protons and electrons. Elements with lower atomic numbers have higher levels of reactivity on the periodic table. Fluorine is located in the crust of the Earth and is one of the most usual elements found on Earth.
