Food Chain Project Ideas

Instructor: Adrianne Baron

Adrianne has taught high school and college biology and has a master's degree in cancer biology.

Your students are all ready to learn about food chains. The more interactive they are in their learning, the better. Your students will enjoy working alone or in groups as they gain an understanding of food chains through these projects.

Food Chains

Learning about food chains is important in studying an ecosystem. There are so many food chains that occur in every type of biome. Interactive projects can help with this learning process. The projects below allow students to work together as well as individually as they learn about food chains.

Create Food Chains

This project gives students a visual of food chains.

Materials

  • Construction paper (several sheets of 5 different colors)
  • Glue
  • Markers
  • Technology for research

Procedure

  • Cut construction paper lengthwise to make four strips.
  • Have your students get one strip of each color paper, markers and glue.
  • Explain to your students that they are going to create a food chain using the construction paper.
  • Tell your students to write the name of a producer on one color, primary consumer on another color, secondary consumer on a third color, tertiary consumer on the fourth color and finally a decomposer on the last color strip.
  • Have your students link the strips together from producer through decomposer.
  • Your students should write a summary of the food chain they created. The summary should also include definitions for each trophic level.

Act It Out

Students learn very well when they are part of the lesson. Acting It Out allows students to apply what they have learned about food chains in a visual and interactive manner.

Materials

  • Pictures of different animals and plants from the Internet or a magazine
  • Craft sticks
  • Glue
  • Colored pencils
