Forces of Nature Lesson Plan

Suzanne has taught all levels PK-graduate school and has a PhD in Instructional Systems Design. She currently teachers literacy courses to preservice and inservice teachers.

Through this lesson plan, students will learn the characteristics and examples of the four forces of nature through a video lesson, analysis of examples, and discussion.

Learning Objectives

As a result of this lesson, students will

  • name the four fundamental forces of nature
  • list the forces in order of strength from weakest to strongest
  • define and give an example of each force

Materials Needed

  • Projector or SMART Board
  • Four Forces Cards (1 set for each group of students) see details below for how to create these cards prior to the lesson.
  • Four Fundamental Forces of Nature Quiz (1 copy per student) the link for this quiz is listed within the lesson.

Instructions

  • Introduce the lesson by writing the four fundamental forces of nature on the board.
  • Tell students that during this lesson, they will learn about each of these fundamental forces.
  • Begin the video lesson, The Four Fundamental Forces of Nature.
  • Stop the video at 2:02 and discuss the first two sections, with questions such as:
    • What are the four fundamental forces of nature?
    • What is gravitational force?
    • The lesson describes it as a 'feeble' force. What does this mean?
  • Return to the video. Stop the video at 3:31 and discuss the third section of the lesson, 'Electromagnetic Force,' with questions such as:
    • What is electromagnetic force?
    • Is it 'feeble' like gravity?
    • What are some examples of electromagnetic force in real life?
  • Return to the video. Stop the video at 4:54 and discuss the fourth section of the lesson, 'Strong Force,' using questions such as:
    • What is strong force?
    • Why isn't it possible for us to see strong force with just the naked eye?
    • What are the smallest known particles which are brought together by strong force to form neutrons and protons?
  • Watch the rest of the video. Discuss it with the students, with questions such as:
    • What is the last of the four fundamental forces?
    • Why is 'weak force' not a good name for this force?
    • Why is it called 'weak force' if it isn't the weakest of the four fundamental forces?
    • What is weak force?
