In ''A Chip off the Old Block'', the sixteenth chapter in Rodman Philbrick's novel, ''Freak the Mighty,'' Max has been kidnapped by his father, Killer Kane. Will he escape?

Kidnapped

Grim's worst nightmare comes to life when Killer Kane sneaks into Max's room in the middle of the night and takes him captive in chapter sixteen of the Rodman Philbrick novel, Freak the Mighty. Killer Kane is Max's father who has been serving time in prison for the murder of Max's mother. According to Loretta, Kenny Kane (Killer Kane) found God while he was in prison. Has he really changed?

Strangers

Max is paralyzed with fear. ''It's time I got to know my own son, who had his mind poisoned against me,'' says Killer Kane as Max gets dressed. Grim getting shot with his own gun seems pretty likely… Max hopes he stays upstairs. Killer Kane explains that he was framed and Max realizes that he always knew that someday, his dad would come for him. Killer Kane forces him outside as Max tries to comprehend this surreal experience. Under the streetlight, Kane takes a good look at Max, astounded at how much Max looks like him. Max notices how large his dad is and he thinks, ''He doesn't need a suit of armor.''

Hideout

Killer Kane complains of all the Christmas Eve's that he was deprived of his son while in prison for a crime he did not commit. Should Max believe him? As they drive towards the millpond, Killer Kane forces Max to duck when the one car they pass drives by. Max knows where they are going before they arrive…the New Testaments. The New Testaments are tenements in the wrong part of town. Drugs and violence are a big part of life in the New Testaments. Killer Kane compares the nativity story from the New Testament of the Christian Bible to Kane and Max seeking shelter in the New Testaments on Christmas Eve. When they arrive at their destination and the door opens, Loretta Lee is standing there.

The tenements barely meet minimum housing standards.
