Freak the Mighty Chapter 21 Summary
Killer Kane Is in Custody Again
What happens after Max escapes from Killer Kane? Killer Kane is the nickname that has been given to Max's dad, Kenny Kane, after Kenny killed Max's mother. The police have arrested Kenny Kane once again on a number of charges, but will they stick? In chapter twenty-one of Freak the Mighty, we find out the aftermath of Max's terrible ordeal.

Charges Are Filed
Once Kenny is secured in handcuffs and the police are sure that no one has been seriously injured, everyone goes down to the police station. Killer Kane is booked on violation of parole, violation of a restraining order, abduction of a minor, and two counts of attempted murder. A plea bargain will put Kane behind bars for all of his previous life sentence plus an additional ten years.
Reliving the Moments
The police take pictures of Max's neck before sending him to the hospital for X-rays only to return back to the police station for more questions. Gram finally went home because the police spent hours having Max retell the same story of being kidnapped again and again. Imagine reliving that moment!
Grim tells Max, 'I can't tell you what it felt like, coming up out of the basement and seeing that double track of footprints in the snow. I knew it was him, I just knew it in my heart.' 'The man is an accident of nature, ' Grims says, 'All you got from him is your looks and your size. You've got your mother's heart, and that's what counts.' Max secretly worries that he will end up like his father.
Max sleeps in a fold-out couch upstairs so that he doesn't have to be alone and Gram can check on him several times a night.
Heroic Biker Babe
Loretta Lee, the heroic biker babe as she was called by the papers, was hurt pretty badly with a cracked bone in her neck, but she will be okay. Iggy was noticeably worried about her, which made Max think he might not be so bad. 'It all goes to show, like Grim says, that you can't always judge a book by the cover.'
Kevin's Health Declines
Gwen is still furious with Kevin for disobeying her by getting out of the car and confronting Kenny Kane, especially because he seems to have a lot of trouble catching his breath now that his insides are outgrowing his outsides. 'Dr. Spivak says my unique status as a marvel of genetic aberration makes me an object of intense curiosity,' says Kevin. Aberration means departure from the normal type.
Max wonders why won't Gram let him stay home from school when Kevin has to go get medical tests to prepare for his operation? Doesn't she know they're a team?
Lesson Summary
Once everyone is accounted for, Max goes to the police station to provide a witness statement. Loretta cracked a bone in her neck, but she will recover. Grim and Gram were terrified by the experience and keep a watchful eye on Max. Killer Kane is charged with a parole violation in addition to violation of a restraining order, abduction of a minor, and two counts of attempted murder. The terms of Kane's plea bargain will keep him in prison for a very long time. Kevin seems to be getting worse, but he doesn't seem concerned. Max worries about turning out like his dad, but Grim says that he is more like his mom in his heart, which is where it counts.
