Freak the Mighty Chapter 22 Summary

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

In chapter 22 of the Rodman Philbrick novel, ''Freak the Mighty'', Max learns what Kevin means when he says that, 'remembering is just an invention of the mind'.

A Time to Celebrate

By chapter 22 of Rodman Philbrick's Freak the Mighty, things are getting back to normal after the Killer Kane fiasco. Max's father, who was nicknamed Killer Kane after murdering Max's mother, had been released from prison on parole; he violated a restraining order to kidnap Max. With Kevin's help, Max was able to escape and Killer Kane was put away for good. Now, school is out for the summer, and the boys prepare a birthday celebration. The only question is whether Kevin feels well enough to participate.

Remembering

'Walking high' is what Max and Freak call it when Freak rides on Max's shoulders. To appease Kevin's mother, Gwen, they have scaled back their adventures but Kevin's imagination makes even walking fun. One day, Kevin asks Max if he remembers what is was like in the Ice Age. How could Max remember something that happened before he was born?

'Don't be a pinhead,' Kevin says, 'Remembering is just an invention of the mind.' Freak likes to recall inventing things like the wheel during the Ice Age. 'You don't need a time machine if you know how to remember.'

Birthday Party

Kevin turns 13 years old at the same time that 'Freak the Mighty' turns one year old. Freak the Mighty is what Kevin and Max call themselves when they are together as a unit. With Kevin's big brain and Max's big body, they are invincible! Kevin teases his mother about wanting a helicopter or a ride in the space shuttle for his birthday, but he is thrilled with the computer Gwen has gotten him; it will allow Kevin to communicate with Max through a matching computer if he is unable to go to school.

Kevin doesn't eat much at the party. Saving room for cake is his excuse, but when that comes, he doesn't eat much of it, either. His big mouth and sense of humor is still on cue. 'I should have asked for earplugs,' he says as they sing 'Happy Birthday'. Gwen threatens to sing another round if he isn't careful.
