Freak The Mighty Lesson Plan

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

This lesson plan may be used by teachers to bring deeper understanding of the text to students who have read 'Freak the Mighty' by Rodman Philbrick. Students will explore themes and characters from the novel.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson students will be able to:

  • identify and describe themes of this story
  • analyze the main characters of the story and describe their growth over the course of the story
  • summarize the novel

Length

This lesson will take approximately 45-90 minutes.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.2

Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.6.3

Describe how a particular story's or drama's plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.

Vocabulary

  • Static character - a character whose personality or beliefs stay the same througout the story
  • Dynamic character - a character who changes in personality or beliefs as a result of some action in the plot

Instructions

Materials needed: chart paper, markers

Activate prior knowledge by asking students to think about an event or a relationship in their life that was so profound that it changed them. Explain that this is personal, so they do not need to share. Just think about whether they believe they changed for the better or worse after the experience and why this particular influence had so much power over them.
