Determine a theme or central idea of a text and how it is conveyed through particular details; provide a summary of the text distinct from personal opinions or judgments.

Describe how a particular story's or drama's plot unfolds in a series of episodes as well as how the characters respond or change as the plot moves toward a resolution.

  • Static character - a character whose personality or beliefs stay the same througout the story
  • Dynamic character - a character who changes in personality or beliefs as a result of some action in the plot

Materials needed: chart paper, markers

Activate prior knowledge by asking students to think about an event or a relationship in their life that was so profound that it changed them. Explain that this is personal, so they do not need to share. Just think about whether they believe they changed for the better or worse after the experience and why this particular influence had so much power over them.
