Use this lesson plan to teach your students about artist Frida Kahlo. Students will read a text lesson describing her life and work, examining her unique style. An application activity and quiz let students apply learning and show what they know.

Learning Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:

  • Images and copies of work by Frida Kahlo, specifically those mentioned in this lesson
  • Analysis pages, one for each student (a piece of paper divided into three sections, each with room for a sketch and writing)
  • Hand mirrors
  • Paint

  • Brushes

  • Note that some of Frida Kahlo's artwork may not be suitable for your students. Prepare for this lesson in advance, choosing work for analysis that will meet the needs of your class.
  • If choosing controversial images, prepare students by discussing how artists often express their inner lives, experiences and emotions through dark and graphic ways. Approach the topic as fellow artists, with a quest to understand the work of others in order to gain a deeper understanding of techniques and methods.
