Geometric Constructions Project Ideas

Instructor: Kerry Gray

Kerry has been a teacher and an administrator for more than twenty years. She has a Master of Education degree.

Geometric constructions are shapes, angles, and lines that are drawn using a compass, a ruler, and a pencil. These projects provide opportunities for students to learn about and create geometric constructions.

Geometric Constructions

Geometric constructions have been a part of geometry instruction since Euclid wrote the first geometry book thousands of years ago. These constructions prove geometric theories using nothing more than a compass, a straightedge, and a pencil. Geometric constructions enable students to learn about the history of geometry, engage in geometric thinking, and explore the creative aspects of geometry. The projects included in this asset provide students the opportunity to research and create geometric constructions.

Grade level: 9th - 12th

Geometric Constructions Scrapbook

Students will learn how to make a wide variety of geometric constructions and create examples to display in a scrapbook.

Time: 2-3 weeks

Key Terms:

  • bisector
  • circumscribe
  • congruent
  • equilateral
  • inscribe
  • parallel
  • pentagon
  • perpendicular
  • tangent

Guiding Questions

  • How can I use my tools to demonstrate an understanding of geometric concepts?

Materials:

  • compass
  • drawing paper
  • pencil
  • ruler

Procedure:

  • Students will compile a scrapbook that contains at least 20 geometric constructions that they have created using their tools.
  • Students will research how to draw each of the constructions before creating and labeling their construction.
  • Portfolios should include the following:
    • copy a line segment
    • bisect a line segment
    • bisect an angle
    • copy an angle
    • draw a 30-degree angle
    • draw a 45-degree angle
    • draw a 60-degree angle
    • draw an equilateral triangle
    • draw a scalene triangle
    • draw an isosceles triangle
    • draw a perpendicular line
    • draw a parallel line
    • construct three parallel lines intersecting a non-perpendicular transversal
    • draw congruent angles
    • identify the center of a circle
    • inscribe an equilateral triangle
    • circumscribe a circle on a triangle
    • inscribe a regular hexagon
    • draw a pentagon
    • draw a rhombus

The Flower of Life Geometric Construction

Students will research a famous geometric construction and recreate it.

Time: 2-3 days

Key Terms:

  • intersections
  • proportion
  • symmetry

Guiding Questions

  • How can I recreate a geometric construction?

Materials

  • compass
  • drawing paper
  • pencil
  • computer/internet
