What Are German Shepherds?

Your family decides to get a dog! You are trying to decide between two breeds, or kinds, of dogs: a golden retriever and a German shepherd. Are German shepherds good pets? What do you need to do to take good care of a German shepherd? You want to learn lots of facts about both kinds of dogs to help you make your decision!

What Do German Shepherds Look Like?

German shepherds are big dogs with thick fur.

German shepherds are very big dogs. They can weigh between 55 and 95 pounds, and males weigh more than females. That means that your German shepherd might weigh more than you for awhile! German shepherds have long, muscular bodies with long snouts, or muzzles. They have pointed ears and are usually tan and black or red and black in color. Their fur is very thick and they have two coats of fur that helps keep them warm.

How Do German Shepherds Grow?

German shepherds are mammals, so the mother gives birth to live babies. Puppies are born in a litter, or a group. Shepherd puppies love to play and grow very quickly! You can tell that German shepherd puppies are going to get much bigger because they have huge paws when they are puppies! They can live to be as old as 15 years.
