Direct Instruction

  • Gather students together and show them a collection of golf clubs, including a driver, putter and iron.
  • Allow students to look closely at the clubs and make predictions for what each is used for. Which ones are used to move the ball a far distance? Which are used to move a short distance? Why?
  • Tell students the names of the clubs and explain the purpose of each.
  • Now choose a putter and demonstrate proper grip.
  • Give each student a putter and have them practice the proper grip. Circulate the room to help students move their fingers and hands accordingly.
  • Now demonstrate how to swing the club properly to putt a ball. Have students practice.
  • Instruct students to line up on one side of the gym or field and give each a golf ball. On your go, have students practice making small strokes to move their ball to the other side.
  • When all students reach the other side, have them repeat and return to the first side.

Putt Practice

  • Tape plastic cups to the ground to create a 'hole.' Spread out around your playing surface.
  • Mark a spot about five feet from the hole with tape.
  • Send each student to a hole to practice putting. Have them stand on the tape line and place their ball on the ground, then attempt to putt into the cup.
  • Challenge students by moving the tape further away from the cup.
