Instructions
- Connect and engage students with the topic by allowing them to view several graphic novels freely. After ten minutes, ask students for comments and observations and record some of their points on the board or chart paper.
- Tell students they will be learning about and writing a graphic novel, then distribute the lesson Graphic Novel: Definition, Artists & Examples.
- Have students read the first section 'Picture Books for All Ages: Graphic Novels Defined' and discuss:
- How long have graphic novels been around?
- Why is the credibility of the graphic novel challenged?
- Next have students read the 'Differences' and 'Similarities' sections. Define terms and guide students on creating a Venn diagram or T-chart to illustrate similarities and differences.
- Now have students read the section 'Artists and Their Graphic Novels.' Divide students into four groups and have each research information about each artist. If possible, have samples of these works available. Otherwise, allow students to search for information. Have students present information to the rest of the class.
- Instruct students to read the Lesson Summary and answer any remaining questions.
- Have students take the quiz before moving on to the activity.
Activity
- Now that students have a good idea of what graphic novels are, they will create their own. Give students time to brainstorm a story line and sketch images.
- If possible, allow students to work in small groups or partners.
- As students work, circulate the room to check in on progress and offer suggestions.
- Allow students to do more research on methods of creating graphic novels used by artists for guidance if possible.
- Provide ample time for students to do a rough sketch of a few pages. If more time is needed, assign completion of their graphic novel for homework.
- After publication, allow students to share and offer one another feedback.
