Graphing art projects are a great way to get students of all ages to apply mathematical concepts to build creative works of art. These projects guide students through the process

Graphing Art Projects

Graphing art projects can be an engaging way to get students using their artistic skills and applying mathematical knowledge at the same time. These projects are organized by level, with one for elementary, one for middle, and one for high school. Each project has multiple components, but the tasks become more complex as the level increases. These projects are best applied with students working independently from peers, although having a partner or team to consult when a challenge arises may be beneficial.

Elementary Project

In this project, upper elementary students will color boxes on grid graph paper based on axis points that you provide. As they color the boxes, the art will be revealed. Encourage students to carefully follow directions and consider partnering students for the initial example project. As they become comfortable with the process and directions, it's best for them to complete the remainder of the project independently.

Materials

  • ¼-inch grid graph paper with axis coordinates labeled
  • colored pencils (same set of colors for each student or shared team set)
  • two simple graphing art design with directions listing coordinates for image completion
  • four complex graphing art designs with directions listing coordinates for image completion
  • simple shapes or images for students to replicate in creating their own graphing art
