Guided reading time is a great opportunity for teachers to meet with students who are reading at a similar level or who have similar skill deficits to provide targeted instruction. The guided reading template that is included in this lesson plan will help organize your guided reading lessons.

Guided Reading Groups

While you may dream of a classroom where everyone arrives with adequate background knowledge and grade-level skills, the reality is that each of our students arrives with different strengths and challenges. As a teacher, you must assess each student and determine what he/she needs to remain challenged and continue to grow.

One of the biggest obstacles teachers face when differentiating instruction is how to organize and manage small learning groups. There are a couple of ways that teachers create groups depending on the goal of instruction. Some teachers arrange their reading groups based on the students' reading levels, providing students flexible opportunities to change groups as different members advance to new levels at varying rates. Other teachers arrange their groups based on skill mastery.

Once the groups have been formed and the purpose established, it is time to begin designing lessons. During the lesson, teachers will make decisions regarding student needs in the areas of decoding, comprehension, and fluency. Examine the following template:
