Instructions - Day One

  • Connect students with the topic by showing a video or series of videos of gymnastics. As students watch, ask them to consider what the athlete is doing to remain safe.
  • Discuss the importance of safety in all sports, then share specifics related to gymnastics.
  • Tell students they will be learning about gymnastics safety then how to develop gymnastics skills.
  • Distribute the lesson Safety in Gymnastics: Techniques & Equipment and instruct students to read the first section 'Safety in Gymnastics,' then ask:
    • What are some risks involved in gymnastics?
    • What are some common injuries related to gymnastics?
  • Now divide students into five groups. Assign each a section from the lesson (divide the section 'General Gym Safety Tips' into three sections) and instruct students to read their section and create a safety poster to teach other students about their topic.
  • As students work, walk around the room to keep students on task and offer guidance.
  • When groups are finished, allow them to present their posters. Discuss each component, then hang posters in the gym or area where gymnastics will be practiced.
  • Read the 'Lesson Summary,' then take the No InterWiki reference defined in properties for Wiki called "lesson quizhttps"! together to check for understanding.
