Health & Fitness in Vocational Settings

Over the last fifteen years there has been a big push to integrate health and fitness into vocational settings. By introducing health and fitness tips and information to the workplace, employees and employers are able to boost productivity and reduce the number of missed days of work due to injury or other health issues.

Vocational Settings Today

The majority of Americans today belong to a workforce where they are subjected to long hours and prolonged periods of sitting. Many jobs require that employees sit at a desk and work on a computer all day long for at least five days a week. The work is important, but it is also conducive to a more sedentary lifestyle. As a result, the workforce is becoming less active. And this decrease in activity directly leads to an unhealthy lifestyle.

Most companies and businesses have become aware of this change and have implemented programs where employees are encouraged to take an interest in health and fitness. Not only will employees be able to attain a healthier lifestyle, but a healthy worker is a more productive one. Having workers who are in a more optimal state of health will allow these businesses to be more successful.

Health and Fitness Components

Employees are being taught many things about health and fitness. They receive nutritional information from their employers as well as fitness tips on what they can do while at work to help achieve a healthier state. These tips and information not only boost productivity, but also reduce the time these employees miss work due to health concerns. The following are a few of the components being taught to workers today.

  • Proper Posture
  • Ergonomics (desk and office space setup)
  • Exercises/Fitness activities

Proper Posture and Ergonomics

Proper posture while seated at a desk all day or in a car driving all day is very important. When the body is constantly holding an improper posture, the worker is at a greater risk for injury and illness. Simply maintaining and implementing correct posture can help workers feel more comfortable throughout the day with a decreased chance of injury to their back or neck. Posture is probably the most heavily stressed topic in vocational settings.

Ergonomics refers to the way a person's work space is set up. Is their desk chair set too low or far away from the computer? Or is the chair set to a proper height where the worker's neck is not strained by looking at the computer all day long? Things such as chair and desk placement and setting help employees work in an environment that is best arranged to preserve their health. Many companies and businesses send out ergonomics information weekly to their employees. Something as simple as speaking on a Bluetooth headset rather than talking on a phone squeezed onto one side of the neck will save the worker from stress and strain on their muscles.
